Autumn Activities in the Snowy Mountains

8 activities that you and your family will enjoy on your next holiday

Autumn has well and truly arrived in the Snowy Mountains with the temperature dropping and weather changing. The busy winter holiday season is just around the corner, but there is still plenty to do throughout our region before the snow arrives! 🍂

Visit Lake Jindabyne

With pristine waters and stunning mountain backdrops, Lake Jindabyne is the centerpiece of the town and is definitely worth a visit. Grab a hot drink from one of the excellent local cafes in town and head down to the Lakeside to enjoy a wander along the shore whilst taking in the views.

Go for a Hike!

Put on your hiking boots and head for the mountains to explore stunning alpine landscapes on foot. Popular trails are the Rainbow Lake hike, Porcupine Rocks trail, the Waterfall track or Thredbo to the highest point in Australia, Mount Kosciuszko! An elevated platform track makes the hike to Mount Kosciuszko easier for the kids, but be sure to pack plenty of water and snacks.

Horse riding

If you’re looking for an authentic high country experience, jump on a horse and ride through the mountains of the Thredbo Valley with Nev and the team at Thredbo Valley Horse riding. Catering for all abilities, there is no better way to immerse yourself in the bush.

Fishing

Jindabyne is a premier destination for all things fishing, offering a variety of lake, stream and river fishing. Untouched waters fed from the Snowy, Thredbo and Eucumbene rivers offer plenty of opportunity for a great catch during peak season.

Golf

Don’t forget to pack your clubs for your Autumn holiday and book in for a round of golf in the Snowies. Cooma and Coolamatong both boast an 18 hole course each, whilst Thredbo offers a spectacular 9 hole course that runs around the base of the mountain and alongside the Thredbo River.

See the Sights!

Jindabyne and the surrounding areas offer a myriad of stunning sight seeing opportunities. Pack a picnic and head out to the Gaden Trout Hatchery for a lovely break beside the bubbling Thredbo River. You might even see some trout jumping from the crystal clear waters! Looking for something with a bit of altitude? Head up to Thredbo to enjoy a ride on the Merritts Gondola for incredible mountain views and tasty dining at Merritts Mountain House.

Shop

Take the time to wander through the town centre to visit the array of unique local businesses throughout Jindabyne. With several boutique clothing stores and cosy cafes, you are sure to find something memorable to remember your trip by.

Taste and Sip

Need something to eat or drink after a busy day exploring the mountains? There are plenty of options featuring local produce for you to sample. Head to the WildBrumby Distillery on the Alpine Way for a lovely lunch and some schnapps, or down to Jindabyne Brewery, the Banjo Paterson Inn or Shut the Gate in Berridale for more sips that are locally made and produced.
